Devil’s Dice is a new board game in which you “Lie or Die” your way to summoning the devil. It heavily parodies the Satanic Panic of the 80s through a Tim Burton-esque childlike aesthetic.
The goal of the game is to have one of each dice face between your hand and the common pool. In each turn, you can do a number of actions that have some requirement to be able to do them. But because all players’ hands are hidden, you can lie about your dice and do an action anyway, but are punished if caught.
I personally really enjoy this game, and would recommend anyone to check out their website and give the game a go!
For this project, the client needed new designs for their new, smaller rules reference cards. The biggest first step was picking apart what words were needed and which weren’t, and which could be articulated through icons and symbols instead. Immediately, I thought since the box art featured a group of kids playing the game in a haunted house, that the cards could be the map to that haunted house, with instructions on how to summon the devil.

Likewise for the back face, I knew I would need to shorten the wording and come up with symbols for the various concepts such as gaining a die. The other fun part to come of this was the “Lie or Die” tagline, which we also ended up putting on the poster.
